Question by m: What’s the best way to practice to become a Linux server admin?
Sorry for the dumba** question, but here’s the situation.
Every job I’ve had, we’ve worked w/ a unix server set up w/ some distro of Linux. For the most part, I’ve just found myself interacting w/ the server through a terminal launched in a Windows desktop.
I haven’t had admin priviliges for the server; just basic priviliges to get in, get what I need, write what I need to, and get out.
Having not yet been put in a position to shadow the server admin, and facing experience requirements to get the position that I need to get that experience, I’m in a bind.

In the past, when doing client-server apps, I’ve just done little server applications and client applications on the same machine.
I haven’t run a server OS before, so I don’t really know how to go about looping it back to possibly act as both server and client on the same machine. This would be preferable. Alternately, I could set up a tiny, 2-3 comp at home LAN and work through that, if absolutely necessary.
For all intents and purposes, I’m a complete server admin newbie.
Any self-taught Linux server admins who managed w/o shadowing anyone or specific training classes out there? How did you do it? Thanks :)

Answer by RAVEN
The easiest way is to install Linux on a home system, learn Linux and Linux Admin from an online training source (Lynda.com, e.g.) then use what you learn on your own system. You won’t find anyone that’s willing to let you use their system for guinea pig testing, so your best option is to use the one person who won’t object – you.

Question by ??????: Virus writers, what’s the difficulty scale on this?
Just looking for a difficulty scale here…

OS: XP, fully patched as of 9/8/09
Zone Alarm Pro, with OSFirewall enabled

Have an app execute with these options succefully:

1. modify tcp.sys and bind Svchost.exe with your own code so as to bypass Firewall’s “new program trying to access internet, acting as server”
2. install background service so as to avoid “new program registered for startup” that searches for known remote peers and atempts to connect to them
3. Harvest all IE, firefox, Skype, Steam username and passwords within a given time to send to remote peers
4. Bind all non-system executables with your own code, registering autoruns to every new usb drive
5. Hook into sector 0-63 in the MBR so if user formats, machine code still remains

Just looking for a difficulty scale here…

1 to 10 it would be 8 because of #5 the mbr is to small

#1 to 4 would be 3 if the file size doesn’t matter
6 if you want a small file.

What’s the best way to hem sheer nylon fabric?

Question by NEWTOME: What’s the best way to hem sheer nylon fabric?
I bought some 80″ sheers for the dining room but hated the color when I put them up. Turns out, they’ll be perfect in the kitchen but they’re way too long. I have a sewing machine but I’m scared I’ll snag them. I like fabric glue but I’m not sure if it’ll work. There’s also binding tape, but I wonder if the iron will melt the fabric. The hem won’t show the way I plan to hang them (with 2 ribbons to pull up the length). Got any advice for me?

Best answer:

Answer by Ann H
Do you have a serger or a standard sewing machine? If you have a serger, I would recommend a rolled hem using that setting on the machine. It’s clean and easy and it won’t come undone.

Otherwise I would just do a plain old hand stitched hem. Cut the curtains 1 inch longer than you need them to be. Then press a fold one inch from the cut end. Press that in half (so the raw edge in tucked inside), and stitch it closed. With a hem you don’t need to use a lot of stitches, try to make them as small as possible so you don’t see them on the finished side of the fabric.

Since you are concerned about an iron melting the fabric, use a cool setting and a press cloth. Test a small piece of the fabric that you are cutting off first to be sure that it won’t melt to the cloth. Pin up the hem, cover it with a dish towel or old sheet and have at it!

I think that stitching the hem will give you a more finished look than either glue or binding tape will, you’ll probably be happier with the finished product – even if it is a little more work initially.

Good luck!

Question by hogo05: What’s the best binding machine for under 0?
I need to replace our binding system (currently using a GBC wirebind system) and am hoping to get a comb bind – electric machine. It’s for an office of about 50 people, we bind about 50 proposals (3 – 60 pages) a week on average. Any tips would be helpful!

Best answer:

Answer by PacificHR S
all of GBC’s products are pretty reliable, we have a comb-binder, and it works great. It accommodates all the different size spines, which are available in all kinds of colors and thicknesses.
