Question by Donna S: Why does my thread tangle underneath the fabric.?
I have a new brother sewing machine that works fine when sewing. However when I try to use the embroidery feature the thread binds up on the underneath of the fabric causing it to either break a needle or just to stop. At first it only happened when I used certain colors (may be a coincidence) but now it is just about every time and it is tearing holes in the fabric when this happens. I don’t know much about the machine it was a present for Christmas and my son purchased it on line so I can not take it back and ask for help from dealer. Any help you can give me will be appreciated. Thanks
Thanks B Anne but I sure hope that you are wrong as I just spent something like 0.00 on an assortment of thread so that I would have most colors and I am afraid that my husband will kill me if I have to junk it all.

It sounds like a problem with the tension. Perhaps the setting is different when embroidering. Sorry I don’t know anything specifically about your machine. But I remember once someone at a fabric store said that people had complained about sewing machine problems when the problem was actually cheap thread. So if you are using some off brand of thread, that could be it.

Question by RoB: Why when you sew on thick material with a zig-zag machine does the thread tend to flag on the right side?
I am a sewing machine mechanic and I run into all kinds of problems but these ZZ machines are tough to figure out ! First of all, our ZZ’s are set up with core edge folders and and we run material anywhere from 1/64 to 3/16 thick. Now combined with the binding thats pretty thick! The thicker the material the more the thread flags and skips on the right side. I know that putting pressure on the foot and rising the needle bar along with timing the hook as close to the eye of the needle as possible helps, but there has got to be a better way. I am looking for any ideas I could try.

Try a thicker needle and loosen the tensions . Some times the needle is too small and bends slightly to miss picking up the bottom thread . You may have a ballpoint need;e in there from doing wool or nits . They are not sharp enough for thick material .

Thread or needle lubricant, or lower elasticity of the thread might help, too.

It could be that your thread tension setting are off. If you check the owners manual, it should tell you what they should be set at. If that doesn’t work I would take it back or contact Singer and see if they have any suggestions.

Thanks B Anne but I sure hope that you are wrong as I just spent something like $150.00 on an assortment of thread so that I would have most colors and I am afraid that my husband will kill me if I have to junk it all.
