Q&A: a sewing question?

Question by ~xoxo!~: a sewing question?
You’re sewing a child’s nylon jacket. You notice the fabric frays easily. Which would be your best buttonhole option?
A. Bound buttonhole
B. Jetted and piped buttonhole
C. Machine-stitched worked buttonhole
D. Handworked buttonhole with iron-on tape

Best answer:

Answer by marc_recardo
I would do C and I would go around another and possibly a 3rd time before I cut the slot. I would also do an iron-on very light weight interfacing on the wrong side before I do the machine stitching. Just iron on a little patch right where the button hole is going to be.

I think I’d put snaps on instead…otherwise use the iron on tape so it doesn’t fray while you’re working the buttonhole.

When sewing a garment how do you sew on bias tape?

Question by twinmom: When sewing a garment how do you sew on bias tape?
I am sewing a child’s apron. The pattern calls for 1/4 inch double fold bias tape to be stitched around the edges. It looks simple enough but I am having trouble stiching it properly and neatly. I have to fold the tape over the edge of the fabric and then stitch that down. How do I make sure the fabric and tape stay in place? Several times I have fed the whole thing through the machine only to find that the fabric slipped out of the binding because it wasn’t stitched into the fold. Also, how do I make a straight stitch? The tape is so narrow I have no room and I don’t know how to make sure the machine makes a straight line. Can anyone help?
Is Steam a Seam like Stitch Witchery (the iron down tape)?

Best answer:

Answer by kbutler1995
I like to use Steam a Seam for hold edging in place with out pins and it will give you an idea of how it will look when done. The steam a Seam is put on with hot iron with steam output. If results aren’t perfect in your eyes you can seperate fabric before it cools down.

Sewing Embroidery question?

Question by Sunny: Sewing Embroidery question?
Hi – I would like to embroider blankets with names and personalized messages along the binding. what kind of embroidery sewing machine would be good for this. It is not for a business (as of now), just for myself and gifts. Any ideas??

Best answer:

Answer by Grouch
There are several out there. Look at Singer and Brother. You probably don’t want to spend a lot on it if it’s just for personal use so those two would not be very expensive.
