03 automatic hyundai tiburon problems…?
Question by Steven: 03 automatic hyundai tiburon problems…?
Ok I have a few problems with my car and I would like some help… It’s a 2003 automatic Hyundai Tiburon V6 GT 4 speed, 76k miles.
I’m having two problems (that I know of):
1 – Transmission
Probably a year ago my transmission started acting up (kept shifting through the gears by itself and was jerking a lot) and got stuck in third gear. I drove it up to Autozone since it was near and had one of their employees hook it up to the machine… He said it was stuck in third gear. I let it sit for a few days and checked the transmission fluid, oil, and coolant and the transmission fluid and coolant were nearly empty. I added more and it drove just fine for the next… Probably three months. One day I was driving down the highway and it kept going back and forth between third and fourth gear. Eventually it got back to where it was stuck in third gear (even though it had fluid) some of the time, but other times it would run just fine. It’s now stuck in third gear and has been for probably 9 months, only drove it for three of them.
I would like to know if (which I figure I will) and how to replace the transmission, or if there are a few parts that i can replace to save me some of the cost (looked some up and they ranged from 2-3 grand). I read somewhere if you just change the transmission fluid and fluid filter that it will be good to go, but I figure with my luck it’s beyond help.
2 – Overheating
As of now, I can drive it from 5-10 minutes and within that time frame it will be smoking and spewing out coolant from a cylinder on the left of my radiator (which will be a sludgy brown color, regardless of the fact that I had filled it with new coolant a few days prior). I had it looked at by a mechanic and he said the engine coolant and transmission fluid were leaking into each other and my transmission was defaulted to third gear which only made the overheating worse. He said it was beyond help and refused to fix it, but I love my car and want to fix it, even if it isn’t worth it. I love my car, it’s worth it to me! The radiator does need to be replaced (I played chicken with a deer a while back, and I won!) Where would this leak be located and what parts would I need to replace to fix it? Last time I drove it I drove about 15 blocks to my new house and the temperature gauge was already almost halfway up it overheats so quickly.
Any help you can contribute would be great, and please don’t tell me it’s beyond help, I’m bound and determined to have it fixed and back on the road! Sorry for the long story, but I figured I would provide as much information as I could to help
Thanks!
Also: on the overheating, my heater doesn’t work either. I replaced the thermostat, but it didn’t help my heater or the or the overheating.
It has coolant in the radiator, and the mechanic didn’t say there was anything wrong with the engine.
The mechanic said the transmission fluid and coolant were leaking into eachother which was part of what was causing the overheating, it needs a new radiatior but still overheats even when the coolant is full.
