Question by E G: What company first published Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch by Alice Caldwell Hegan?
I have a VERY old suede leather “bound” copy of Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch. The leather of the cover is thin and damaged, the board is missing entirely (worms ate it all??) and the impressions of the cover picture and spine lettering are very worn and faded. The book itself is missing some pages and isn’t in what you would call museum quality condition. I’ve just never seen a copy advertised anywhere with a LEATHER cover! They’re all published in clothbound covers. Because of the impressed picture and titling on the cover and spine (and a rosette-thingy on the back), it appears to have been made by a machine, not by hand. But the cover is so primitive looking, I have to wonder. I’d like to know where I can find more information about the earliest editions of this book. Anyone?

The Century Company in New York published the first US edition of Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch. The first edition was published in 1902.
Hodder and Stoughton (London) published a leather bound edition in the early 1900s.
Check used book sites such as Alibris.com or AbeBooks.co.uk
