Q&A: How do I create a leatherbound book?

Question by Robert P: How do I create a leatherbound book?
I want to create a special case the dimensions of a DVD case for a video game. I want it to look like a leather-bound book, with embedded gold typography and emblem.

I have no idea how to do this, though. Any suggestions? If I could just find out a way to embed the gold text and emblem, I think I could manage, but that’s the most difficult part. How do I do that without an expensive machine?

How do I replace a book binding?

Question by Kristen: How do I replace a book binding?
I need to recover a book that is old enough to not have an ISBN number, so I can’t get the precise dimensions online. Nonetheless, I have a rough estimate.
Does anyone know how to replace or recover a book binding? I never got around to learning how when I worked in the library. Oh- and I’d prefer to do it using everyday household materials- I can’t be scraping lambskin and sewing bindings together using a 1200 year-old technique. Just presume I have no more than tape, scissors, paper, an inkjet printer and a small personal lamination machine.

Question by First L: Is there a machine that will scan a book into a word document?
I’ve heard of a machine that allows a person to scan a book into a computer and then later search text using “control f”. From what I heard it is necessary to cut the binding of the book. Does anyone know what I’m talking about?

Q&A: book binding machine?

Question by Tati: book binding machine?
my son has always loved to look at books but for some reason the only ones he’ll let me read to him are ones i’ve made. i’ve been printing them out and taking them to staple to get a spiral binding, it’s not a big deal i think it cost but with the three little ones actually getting to staples is a problem so i was wondering if anyone know of a fairly cheap way to bind books, i don’t want to use staples since my son will be holding them and i wouldn’t want him to get scratched, and tying with yarn doesn’t seem to hold up well… i’ve seen spiral binding machines but they cost around a hundred not counting supplies

I would do a three-hole punch then use what’s called Loose Leaf Rings in the holes. They’re totally reusable so when your kids get tired of oen book you can use them for another. They come in different sizes too. Here is what the rings are http://www.staples.com/office/supplies/p1_Staples-Loose-Leaf-Rings-1-Size_16104_Business_Supplies_10051_SEARCH

Have fun!
