Is it wrong for boss to give “hand me downs”?
Question by is it time to go home yet?: Is it wrong for boss to give “hand me downs”?
I work for a small company of 12 people and I am second in command. My boss (also owner) does not buy me the proper materials for me to do my job. I have been asking for a new computer for 6 months and it never happens.
Aside from this, he came to me yesterday and said he just got a new portable business card case and wanted to give me his old one (it’s 3 years old and it looks like it). I felt angry about this, if he wants me to have a portable business card case he should fork out and buy me a new one! Am I right to think this way? Is his policy of purchasing office materials inappropriate or am I delusional? Your thoughts?
Oh, and as a side note, it’s not that the company doesn’t have any money. He always finds enough to buy his stuff including things that are not necessary and never get used such as a 0 binding machine that hasn’t been taken out of the box for 3 months.

Like they say some people are penny wise and pound foolish. Tell him thanks for giving me everything I don’t need, when are you going to give me what I need to do my job. It now becomes your property and toss it in the trash and walk out. You need enough confidence that could get another job. It’s tough these days but I retired 10 years ago and I could walk out and be working the next day.
What do you think? Answer below!

Well, I don’t know what kind of business you work in but it sounds like your bossneed some help when it comes to financial decissions.
1. You said it was 3 months old. A lot can change in three months so don’t hold that against him.
2. Buy you own 10 dollar card hold you cheap skate if it is so important.
3. 400 dollars is not 1000 dollars. That is why you don’t have a computer.
4. Ask yourself how much is he spending of company money and how much is his personal. As an owner you sometimes spend your own to make your book look better then they are. This way you can justify to the bank why you wrote your employees a pay check
yes dear, you are delusional. He is the OWNER, like he owns the place and pays your salary. You are the WORKER like you do what the boss says, and take the money he gives you, or the used whatever, and if you want a new whatever, you could buy it I suppose.
YOU could also find another job, and insist that they treat you the way YOU want to be treated, that is your right!!!! He can probably have a replacement for you within hours, and trained within weeks, and pay her less money than you get…You know, the economy is bad, unemployment is high, and most bosses really don’t want to put up with silly stuff like this.
I think you noticing and commenting on how much money you think the boss has (if I was the boss) would be annoying enough that I’d welcome you finding another job. There are some employees who just aren’t worth putting up with. And since he ignores your pleas, he may be sending you the signal that you are exactly that type of employee, or he would have responded to you before this.
Computers are expensive. A card holder is $10 not $1000.
You could have said no thanks to it. Maybe he is just kinda thrifty, or something. The whole one man’s trash is another mans treasure type thing? maybe he just thought you might like it? Do you have a card holder? At least he thought of you, he could have just chucked it in the trash. As far as the book binder thing, well, first off, he is the owner, and what he spends his company money on is really his business, but do you even know that he used company money for this? maybe he bought it himself? I’m sure he had a reason to buy it. People that own a business don’t generally go around wasting money. And maybe if he thought you really needed a new computer and he could afford it, he would get you one. Most owners want whats best for there company. Especially now when things are so tight. Maybe the next time you are thinking about the way he is spending money, you should remind yourself the small fact that he has his own business. You, do not. He must be doing something right, Don’t ya think?
